Runway Panic

Gods are like stars and stones, they change, but when they shine, they always shine.

PROMPT: Jeanne wished she has chosen the red button.

Jeanne wished she has chosen the red button. When the plane took off she lost her balance and it took a second for her to realize that her legs had fallen off. When the plane came in to land she was able to crawl out of the fuselage. She discovered the crash was on the other side of the runway.

A miscommunication with the control tower caused her to take the wrong runway. She took the runway she was supposed to take, the one on the side of the runway that was covered by a blanket of snow. It was covered by snow, the next one would be covered by ice. The plane slid on the ice and she hit it and she suffered a concussion and had to be carried off of the plane.

To get back to the airport they had to go through a gate that was actually closed. They told her to be quiet and she didn’t. She screamed. She pushed the panic button. When she pressed it the person holding the panic button looked at her and said ‘that’s it, no more screaming.’

“You gotta give up a little bit.”

“What do you mean?”

“You gotta give up a little bit. It’s an adventure.”

“I’m not like you!”

“You’ll find out one day.”

“I don’t want to see you again!”

“It’s a long road, but you can do it. Don’t fight it. If you don’t give in, you’ll find

the answer.”

“I know that,” is how he answers every question and every snare. When he dies, I can only hope he finds peace.

I don’t believe in ghosts. I believe in deities. Gods are like stars and stones, they change, but when they shine, they always shine. When I look in the mirror, I see a person, a real person, a real woman, the only real person in the world.

It’s hard to be a goddess, but I’m going to be a goddess. I have a lot to live for, I know that. I just know that I’m doing it. When I see a child, I see myself.

I know that when I die, I will have to face my demons. But if you look into my eyes, you will see my angel. You will see my friend.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing,” she says, “I’m just looking out the window.”

“Well, you’ve got to go and look,” she says, and walks off into the night.

Editor’s Notes

Generation Process

I used the same “last 50% of previous generation” method as in the “Draconis and the Undead” story to feed a prompt into each generation. The second generation ended so nicely, I decided to leave it there for an ending.

Edits

I only added paragraph formatting for presentation.
